Inaugural Fannie Mae Data Note Examines Falling Homeownership Rates
October 10, 2011
Housing Insights
Fannie Mae’s new Data Note series examines the characteristics of key data sources and mines them for insights into recent market developments. The inaugural Data Note reveals the depth and breadth of recent homeownership setbacks as the nation struggles with the fallout from the housing crisis. The study uses recently released decennial census data to examine homeownership trends by household age and state over the last several decades.
The Data Note finds that the overall homeownership rate declined by about a percentage point between 2000 and 2010, and that rates fell for all age groups with declines for young and middle-age households significantly larger than those for elderly households.
