Fannie Mae Statement on Enhanced Multifamily Radon Standards
Fannie Mae supports the Federal Housing Finance Agency's (FHFA) enhanced radon testing standards to better identify properties with elevated levels of radon, ensuring a more sustainable multifamily environment with a focus on the residents we serve. The new standards will increase testing of ground floor units from 10% to 25% for most Fannie Mae multifamily properties. In addition, Fannie Mae will require an environmental professional to oversee radon testing, subject to the more stringent of Fannie Mae's radon standards and state and local requirements. Fannie Mae also will collaborate with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to encourage better radon data collection on a national level.
The enhanced radon standards, announced during National Radon Action Month, go into effect on June 30, 2023 and align with Fannie Mae's mission of providing reliable, affordable housing opportunities with a focus on tenant health and safety for people across the country. We look forward to working with FHFA, our multifamily customers and stakeholders, and others as we continue to assess these standards.
