Responding to disasters — how our teams assist communities and each other

You may know that Fannie Mae is committed to helping renters, homebuyers, and homeowners throughout their home journeys by creating solutions that expand access to quality, affordable housing opportunities.
But did you know that, through our disaster response and preparedness work, our employees get to exercise their personal impact to help people and communities brace for or come back from disasters like fires and floods? And that’s in addition to Fannie Mae’s dedication to helping people prepare their homes for or recover from a disaster.
Read on to learn about the many ways employees help with disaster work — and the teams and benefits that support them.
Disasters are all of our business — providing everyone with opportunities to help
Leading up to September’s National Preparedness Month, Jackie Seth has been busily working to help her colleagues at Fannie Mae get involved. “I enjoy organizing the programming,” she said. “It’s important that, as employees, we get to see how very valuable our personal contributions can be when disasters like fires and floods threaten communities across the country.”
Activities she’s helped organize for Fannie Mae employees include a FEMA event on the changing climate and expecting the unexpected, preparedness-kit-building sessions, and blood drives in partnership with the American Red Cross. “It’s rewarding to see folks across the company get involved,” Jackie said.
Making a difference when disaster strikes — with paid time to do it
Through benefits like paid volunteer leave and our Disaster Rebuild Deployment volunteer program, employees can swap their day jobs for a few days or a week to work together to make an impact locally or on-site after a disaster. Paige Murray had always felt proud that Fannie Mae was boots on the ground in Paradise, CA, helping the community ever since the 2018 Camp Fire — the state’s deadliest and most destructive fire. “So, when I found out Fannie Mae was sending employees to Paradise in November 2022 to help with rebuild and recovery efforts, I jumped at the opportunity to witness our mission in action,” Paige said.
Paige “traded her keyboard for a chop saw,” and she and her group helped build a tiny house for a mother and daughter she got to meet. Best of all was the support she got from her manager and teammates to go make a real difference. “Our culture of service and all we do to drive positive change in our communities are some of the things I love most about working here,” she said.
