Fannie Mae’s Monthly National Housing Survey™ (NHS) polls homeowners and renters to assess their sentiment toward owning and renting a home, the current state of their household finances, their views on the U.S. housing finance system, and overall confidence in the economy. The survey was designed to gain a better understanding of current attitudes toward housing and to track changes in these attitudes.
The innovative Fannie Mae Home Purchase Sentiment Index™ (HPSI) distills data from six NHS questions into a single indicator designed to effectively and efficiently assess consumers’ outlook on the home purchase environment. This unique index is similar in spirit to two widely followed measures: the University of Michigan Index of Consumer Sentiment and Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index. But unlike general indices of consumer economic sentiment, the HPSI is devoted entirely to housing in order to provide distinct signals about current and future housing market outcomes. Learn more
